The Best Dress at the 2011 Oscars

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Cate Blanchett

There was only one dress at the Oscars that mattered this year – Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Spring 2011 Couture.  Above, you’ll see her in the dress.  Below is the dress from the Givenchy look book.

Givenchy Spring

Notice I didn’t say Best DressED, I said Best Dress.  Why?  She’ll end up on every single list.   Some best lists (It’s couture!  It’s beautiful!  The detail was amazing!) and some worst lists (That was not an Oscar dress.  The silhouette wasn’t flattering.  It wasn’t glamorous).  Cate will be included in every broadcast, in every print round-up, in every web fashion piece, on million of blogs and in the history books.

And that’s what matters.

The Academy Awards are not just an award show or a fashion spectacle.  They are a MARKETING event.  Being talked about and remembered is what counts.

Oscar Food

Monday, February 28th, 2011

I had a few girlfriends over to watch the Oscars.  Of course, we needed snacks!  Here’s what we had.  The popcorn is Real Simple’s barbecue version. It won for “Best Snack”.

Its A Beautiful Day

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

Oak - Sky - Alesya Bags

Its a beautiful day in Charleston.  And I’m inside.

But don’t cry for me.  I played outside this morning and tonight is the granddaddy of all fashion events – The Oscars Red Carpet.  Somewhere in LA designer gowns are anxiously waiting their debut.  (Early prediction?  Natalie Portman saved the best for last.  She’ll finally get it right tonight.)

I’m inside preparing for a busy week.  My nanny is on vacation (have fun!) so my work time we be very limited.  Unlike Camille Grammer I don’t have four nannies, so when she’s away I’m back on deck.  Luckily my husband rearranged his work schedule so he can be home some of the time, but I’ll still be scraping work hours together in the morning, at night and during naps.

Lately, I fallen into the trap of doing work in Real Time Mode.  You know, an email comes in, you answer it, get the reply…answer it again.  When really what you need to do is have a set task and stick to it.  Its the way real work gets done.  But its so easy and gratifying to fall into the Real Time trap.

Now I’m off to do two hard-core hours of work.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Sea Pleasures & Treasures

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Smack dab in the middle of downtown Venice, Florida is a store I love – Sea Pleasures & Treasures. It’s packed with shells, shark teeth, beach toys, pool necessities and plenty of kitsch. And I’d be willing to bet the inventory hasn’t changed much in 25 years.

We traveled to Venice many, many times when I was in school. It holds some of my fondest memories. A break from the cold Michigan weather, my family all in good spirits and many laughs with our friends the Feldkamps.  We all took several trips to Sea Pleasures & Treasures to pick out a shell or plastic alligator.

Now I take my husband and daughter to visit.  We see my parents, go to the beach…you get the idea.  But I can’t go without a stop at my favorite beach shop.  Its so satisfying to find it preserved in real life as it is in my memory.

Inside My Closet

Colors - MacKenzie Image Consulting - Alesya Bags

Yesterday, I told you all the reasons why I needed Closet Analysis.  Another big reason I hired MacKenzie Image Consulting is to have my personal colors done.  I’ve read several books on the topic, but there’s only so much you can figure out yourself.

Megan started out the process by draping me with several different colors to see which ones look the best.  In good colors I looked happy, awake and more myself.  Bad colors made me look like I had no makeup on, gave me dark circles under my eyes and made me look tired.

After the assessment Megan and Shauna concluded something I already knew – I’m an autumn.  But then they refined it – I’m a light autumn.  Plus they gave me a pallet of my specific colors.  Its something every girl needs.  Here’s how mine turned out:

The biggest surprises?  Orange is not a good color for me.  Red is.  Go figure.  All the colors fit in a nice case compact case that I can take with me when I go shopping.

Then it was on to my actual clothes.  Before Shauna and Megan even arrived I had some homework to do.  Pick 5-7 images of:

1. Images That Inspire You

2. Clothes You LOVE (no matter if you think you can wear them or not)

3. Clothes You Would NEVER Wear

Here’s one of the images I picked for clothes I love:

Here’s one from images of clothes I’d never wear:

While I was explaining the clothes I’d love to wear, Shauna said to Meg “Are you noticing a trend here?”  Turns out I like feminine, belted silhouettes.  Incorporating more color and accessories was also a goal.

We walked upstairs to my closet.  Shauna and Meg started pulling out my dresses.  Megan said “OK, this would be perfect with a belt.  Where are your belts?”  Gulp.  ”I don’t own any belts!” I replied.  They both stared at me with eyes wide.  ”How can that be?” Shauna said, “All the clothes you liked included a prominent belt!”  Holy smokes.  I hadn’t even noticed.  NO WONDER I never look like the clothes I like.

They also looked at my “maybe” pile of clothes.  I was thrilled when they figured out how some of the pieces could be reincorporated back in my wardrobe.  For instance, here’s me in a dress I never wear, a necklace I never wear and shoes I wouldn’t normally put with the dress:

After going through my closet, I realized I don’t need a total wardrobe upheavial.   Shauna and Megan put together two weeks worth of new outfits with just the things I already owned.  My short shopping list includes pencil skirts, belts and yellow flats.  Totally manageable.

HUGE thanks to the women of MacKenzie Image Consultants for all their help.  Your advice was helpful, refreshing and exciting.  I already have one of the outfits on today.

Closet Analysis

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

This morning, Shauna Heathman and Megan Roberson of MacKenzie Image Consulting are coming to my house for a closet analysis.  When one of my closest friends heard I was doing this she said, “What?  Alesya, you don’t need that!  You’re a great dresser!”

But I do need the help.  Here’s why:

1. I hate staring at my closet in the morning and figuring out what to wear.  Its a huge waste of time.  I want to have outfits, pull them and GET GOING. Right now, that’s not happening.

2. My life is changing and my wardrobe’s not keeping up.  Two years ago, I worked in an agency office on most days.  My wardrobe centered around the one or two suits I purchased in the Spring and Fall.  I knew how to pull it all together.

3. Now I go to a lot of meetings.  I walk.  I’m in the car.  I’m on the cobblestone.  I go to events.  I’m a fashion entrepreneur and I’ll be damned if I don’t look the part.

4. But I also have days I’m 100% at home.  And I’m not wearing heels to walk from my bedroom to my office.

5.  I’m a mother, but I don’t want to wear sweats, mom jeans or Juicy track suit to the park.  Or anywhere.

6.  It took a LONG time to put my wardrobe together every season.  Hours tracking the trends.  Days at the mall.  Ordering and returning items online.  I don’t have all that personal time anymore.

7. I’m sick of reading books and magazine articles to try a figure out my colors.  I just want someone to tell me already.

While I’m nervous about having someone in my closet, I know its time.  Later today I’ll post how the whole thing went.  Should be an interesting morning.

Everything Else

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

It seems like I’m either working on bag production or everything else.  With the Chinese New Year over and bag production well on its way, today is an everything else kind of day.

Here’s what’s going on:

1. Right after I post this I need to write more copy for the website.  Seriously.

2. I’m waiting on the packaging quote.  A custom box will be made through a company in North Carolina.  I might even order 1,000 boxes.  That seems kind of crazy, but it might be the best price per box.

3. My mind is spinning with ideas for an iPad container.  Thanks to those of you who have already sent me your ideas!  Need to get this other bag over the goal line before I venture elsewhere.

4.  Sorry to tell you I have not called the customs person yet.  Errrr.

5.  No progress yet on the Apple front of the Twelve South meeting.  Need to follow-up and be persistent.

iPad – V2

Kate Spade's iPad Case

It seems the official date for the new iPad is March 2.  I’m finally going to pull the trigger and get one.  For research purposes only.  (I wonder how my account will feel about that statement?)

One of the top ten questions I get is “Are you going to do an iPad case?”  The short answer is “I hope so!” but first I need to figure out how to make it better.  Or if it needs to be a bag.  Or a backpack.  Or a cooler.  Or a jacket.  You get the idea.

Once I have an iPad and use it on a regular basis I’ll be able to figure it out.  See Mr. Accountant? RESEARCH.

#1 on Amazon

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

As you might recall, besides Alesya Bags, I have another job.  I’m Josh Linkner’s booking agent.  If you want a speaker who makes people talk about, love and return to your event give me a ring.

We’re having a big week this week.  Josh’s book hit #1 on Amazon.com.  Wow.

Josh Linkner #1 Amazon

While this is awesome, its also test my abilities to juggle.  I can feel the need to answer emails at midnight and I actually made a business call at 10 pm on Sunday and didn’t think much of it.  5 year ago, this would be me bragging.  Now its me saying, this is not cool.  Lets fix it.
